Father's Day newspaper

In this lesson students make their own newspaper for Father's Day. Everyone has to make a front page with a fanciful name and three other pages. We gave them six categories (weather, sport, shownews, news from the city, a comic and a puzzle). The rest of the pages had to be filled with self chosen articles.

The articles can be written by hand or on the computer.

During this project several subjects come across: language, spelling, writing and illustrating.

But also themes like layout, headlines, editing, editor and journalist can be discussed.

We worked several weeks to complete these newspapers.

Selfportrait in black and white

You need:

  1. canvas
  2. digital photograph
  3. acrylic paint
  4. brushes
  5. carbon paper
  6. pen

Show portraits made by Andy Warhol and discuss them. What is remarkable about those portraits? Would you recognize a Warhol? Why is that?

To make this selfportrait each child needs a digital portrait of himself. Use a photo editor to make the photo black and white. I used Corel Paint Shop Pro. Choose for 'image' and then 'grayscale'. Then click on 'effects', choose 'artistic effects' and then 'posterize'. Choose for four or five layers.

Print the photograph and trace it with a pen and carbon paper on a canvas. Paint the portrait with acrylic paint in greyscale. Paint the background in your choice of colours.

You own worldcup champion shirt!

Back of the champion shirt, with name and number
You need:
  1. template of a T-shirt
  2. coloured cardboard A3 size
  3. coloured paper
  4. scissors
  5. glue

With the World Cup coming up, children make their own football shirt. View on the digital board pictures of footballers who play in the national team. How do you see what the front and back is of a shirt? What's on the back of a shirt? Can you see the nationality of the football player on his shirt?

Conclude with the children that on the back of a shirt is a shirt number is (why would that be?) and the name of the football player.

Students are going to make their own shirt. Let them choose from different colours cardboard. They first have to trace the shirt template cut it out. Then students draw a shirt number and cut it out. Let them do the same with their name. Op restjes papier tekenen de leerlingen een rugnummer en knippen dit uit. Ditzelfde doen ze met de (blok)letters van hun naam. Help with the broadening of the letters will probably be necessary!
Decorate the front of the shirt as you like, but be sure everybody can see that it belongs to a player of your country!

Front of the shirts with Dutch flags, made by children of 7 years old
Tip: with the name of your father, this shirt is a perfect gift for Father's Day!

Mousepad for father's day

You need:
  1. white drawing paper
  2. coloured pencils or felt pens
  3. photographs of the students
  4. laminate sheets

Students glue their photograph on a white sheet. The sheet has to be decorated especially for their dad: chose the colours he loves, draw the things he likes! Laminate the drawing and daddy's mousepad is ready!
